The hill-country line is one of the island's slow pleasures: tea terraces, mist, and a pace that matches Ella better than another highway transfer. It sits at the centre of the Hill Country and Scenic Rail Journey.
How we usually run it
Seats are arranged in advance where we can. Train tickets are a separate cost, not included in the chauffeur-guide journey unless we specifically say so. Your chauffeur-guide typically takes you to the station and meets you at the other end with the bags, so you are not managing luggage in the aisle.
Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella
Kandy is the usual starting hinge from the Cultural Triangle. Some travellers ride a shorter scenic stretch rather than the full popular segment if dates are tight. Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arches can wait for the following morning; the train is enough for one afternoon.
When it disappoints
It disappoints when it is treated as a must-photograph sprint, or when tickets are left to chance in high season. We would rather you skip it than stand. A tailor-made plan can replace the train with a tea-country drive if that is kinder for children or for mobility.
Continue from Ella toward Yala or the south coast, or linger if tea country is the point of the trip.
